Washington 197 Priory Park 92-7 Washington were frustrated by a negative Priory Park team on Saturday. Having set their hosts 198 to win, they looked on bemused as the hosts ‘parked up’ and made no effort to reach their target. The result was a ‘bore-draw’. This was certainly a competitive pitch. Wash batted first but soon ran into trouble: when talented Kiwi opener Tony Harris chopped a ball into his stumps Wash had only 6 on the board. David Gluckman (13) and Taran Persaud (10) then steadied the ship but they were out in consectutive overs, and at 43-4, Wash looked in trouble. Washington’s fifth wicket, however, produced the partnership of the match. Skipper Paul Irons (59) was joined by new-boy Chris Webb (54), and together the pair added 108 in just 13 overs before both fell to the hard-working Lee (3-66) Another tumble of wickets followed, but Dan Barrett (20) and Peter Kloss (11) added 32 for the 9th wicket to take Wash to a very respectable total on a pitch that was always doing a bit. Priory’s reply got off to a slow start. Barrett (0-3) bowled six very quick overs, and in the 10th over, Neil Martin (1-16) had Abishek caught behind to leave the hosts 17-1 off 10. Marty Bock then came on and took 3 wickets, and Peter Kloss added another couple to his season’s tally. However, it was some measure of Priory’s lack of ambition that the Wash skipper was persuaded to give the ‘Gluckman Gliders’ an outing in the hopes of tempting the batsmen into something rash. This ploy proved unsuccessful, but Taran Persaud did pick up the wicket of Ashish with the penultimate ball of the match. So, all in all, a fairly turgid affair, which left skipper Paul Irons scratching his head afterwards: ‘What’s the point of playing if you don’t play to win?’ Wash: Irons (c), Gluckman, Hitchcock (+), Harris, Persaud, Irons, Webb, Barett, Martin, Holbern, Kloss, Bock Man of the Match: Taran Persaud: runs and wickets for the ‘Dark Destroyer’ Packing the Kit: Dan Barrett for scaring the opposition
